Associations of Physical Activity with Aerobic Capacity and Obesity-related Indices in Young Adults

Abstract
In order to obtain database, which is useful for physical fitness testing of workers or atheletes and physical activity related epidemiologic study, we measured daily physical activities of 119 healthy college students by Stanford 7-day Physical Activity Re-call Questionnaire. Maximum V02 of 18 male students, who had reported that their past one week¢¥s physical activities had been about the same as those over the past 3 months, were measured by treadmill exercise test. The associations of daily physical activity with aerobic capacity and obesity-related indices were also observed. Stanford 7-day Physical Activity Recall¢¥s reliability was assessed by 2 week test-retest method.
The results of 18 male students, who had reported that their past one week¢¥s physical activities had been about the same as those over the past 3 months, were as follows
1. The average physical activity score was 42 kcal /kg /day(2,897kcal /day).
2. Their physical fitness results (mean SD) were 3.98 0.42 1 /min(57.5 7.0m1 / kg /min) in V02 max, 36.78.9 kg in right hand grip strength, 34.0 9.4 kg in left hand grip strength and 8.3 6.0 cm in flexibility.
3. Correlation between physical activity and V02 max (r = 0.809) was highly significant. Positive correlation was even higher(r = 0.840) when expressed as ml /kg /min instead of 1 /min. More than "moderate" activity had higher correlation with V02 max than less than "mild" activity.
4. Physical activity (kcal /kg /day) was inversely related to all obesity-related indices.
5. V02 max(ml /kg/min) was inversely related to all obesity-related indices.
6. Stanford 7-day Physical Activity Recall¢¥s reliability measured by test-retest correlation coefficient in 70 students, who had reported that there was no change of physical activity between test (Time 1) and retest (Time 2) period, was 0.576(P< 0.001).
In view of above results, it was suggested that higher physical activity is related with lower obesity-related indices and higher aerobic capacity, and that Stanford 7-day Physical Activity Recall Questionnaire can be useful in the epidemiologic or other re-search using physical activity measurements.
